Content and Design

Kinder College is a fun theme-based learning programme developed for children aged 3 - 7 years.

Content is divided into compact 30 - 90 minute lessons consisting of 3 or more activities.

Each theme contains 5 lessons which can be completed consecutively in 1 week or spread out over several weekends. Our newly released Mini Boxes offer 16 individual theme-based activities, perfect for gifting and holiday/weekend fun.

The programme is designed to grow with your child - the first themes consisting of a few simple, but engaging activities.

As weeks progress and your child's love for learning develops, the number and skill level of activities increase.

The programme is flexible and you can complete as many or as few of the activities as you and your little one feels up to.

Content is divided into themed sections with each box containing the following:

- 4 different letter-based themes

- over 40 activities

- a detailed illustrated guide setting out a number of suggested activities for each lesson

- all printed worksheets, fact sheets and other materials needed to complete the activities

Principles

The following principles are applied in the Kinder College programme:

1.   Phonics

As opposed to learning letter names, children are taught the sounds that different letters make. This approach helps to promote and develop reading readiness.

2.   Letter Order

Rather than teaching letters in alphabetical order, letters are introduced in groups that allow the child to form many words with the letters he or she has learned.

Both the above principles are widely applied in both private- and public school systems in South Africa.

3.   Lowercase

The kinder college learning programme introduces letters in the lowercase form.

When children are introduced to uppercase letter forms too early, it is easy to confuse their correct application. Many children subsequently use capital letters incorrectly in the middle of a sentence.

4.   The Child’s Pace

Our programme aims to develop a love for learning in a relaxed environment and to afford parents/educators the opportunity to forge close ties with the child.

To maintain a positive attitude towards learning, we encourage working at your child’s pace – some days he/she may want to do fewer activities than suggested and other days perhaps more. Nothing prevents you from spending a longer period learning about the same theme or returning to some activities later should they not captivate your child’s attention initially.

DISCLAIMER

Although the Kinder College programme covers the work set out by the Department of Basic Education for Grade R, it was NOT developed by SACE accredited educators and does not replace a formal education.

Rather it is an informal learning tool designed to assist home-schooling parents in educating preschoolers up to and including Grade R or as supplementary practice for older children already enrolled in a formal education programme.
